LaTeX Matrix Generator

Build a LaTeX matrix with editable cells, six bracket styles and live preview. Copy the code or export PNG, SVG and JPG locally in your browser.

Build your matrix

2 × 2

1–10 rows and columns. Enter numbers or LaTeX expressions without $ delimiters. Empty cells become 0. Identity is available for square matrices. Shrinking the grid removes cells outside its new bounds.

Paste spreadsheet data

Paste cells copied from a spreadsheet, or comma-separated CSV. Import replaces the grid; shorter rows are padded with empty cells. Table imports start in Text mode.

The grid updates the preview automatically.

Advanced: edit LaTeX source

Manual edits update the preview. Changing the grid replaces this source. For a document, load amsmath and put the snippet in a math environment.

Embed in text

Paste this code into a page's HTML to scale the image with the text and align its formula baseline. Plain image pasting uses the destination editor's alignment.

LaTeX matrix generator for code and equation images

Build a matrix by filling cells instead of counting ampersands. This LaTeX matrix generator produces an editable math snippet, then previews it with the same browser-local rendering and export features used on our homepage. Check the result, choose an image format, or keep the source for your document. It typesets matrices; it does not calculate inverses, eigenvalues or determinants.

Choose your output

What the LaTeX matrix generator produces

Keep the source when the destination understands LaTeX. Use an image when the destination only accepts pictures.

Editable LaTeX source

Each grid cell becomes one matrix entry. Brackets are generated from the selected environment, with column separators and row endings added for you. Changing a bracket style changes notation, not the values or mathematical meaning of your entries.

Images for teaching and notes

The grid updates the MathJax preview as you edit. Transparent PNG works well over slide backgrounds; SVG is useful when a matrix must remain sharp as it is resized. Increase raster scale before downloading rather than enlarging a small image later.

Local processing with clear boundaries

This LaTeX matrix generator does not upload grid data. Successfully rendered formulas can enter the existing browser-local recent history. A shared converter URL contains formula text and appearance settings, not an editable copy of the grid; treat that URL as readable data.

Workflow

How to use the LaTeX matrix generator

Start with a small example, then expand the grid after the notation looks right.

1

Set up the LaTeX matrix generator

Choose 1–10 rows and columns, then select square brackets, parentheses, braces, single bars, double bars or no brackets. An m × n matrix has m rows and n columns; a column vector is n × 1.

2

Enter values or paste cells

Write numbers, symbols or expressions such as \frac{1}{2}. Do not add dollar signs around individual entries. Empty cells become zero. Paste TSV or CSV data to replace the grid; rows shorter than the longest row are padded.

3

Inspect and export

The preview follows valid grid changes while preserving export settings. Check signs and dimensions before copying or downloading. Expand Advanced: edit LaTeX source for manual adjustments. Editing the source does not update the grid; the next grid change replaces those manual edits.

Notation guide

Choose the environment deliberately

The LaTeX matrix generator offers six AMS-style environments. These labels describe delimiters rather than mathematical operations.

Square and round brackets

bmatrix / pmatrix

Use either style according to your course or publication. Copying the snippet into a document requires amsmath and a surrounding math environment.

Single and double bars

vmatrix / Vmatrix

Single bars are commonly used for determinant notation. Selecting vmatrix does not compute a determinant, and rectangular entries do not become a valid determinant merely by adding bars.

Identity, zero and transpose

1–10 rows × 1–10 columns

Identity fills a square grid with diagonal ones. Zero replaces every entry with 0. Transpose swaps rows and columns; it does not conjugate complex entries. Shrinking a grid removes entries outside its new bounds.

Worked examples and checks

A rectangular transpose check

Enter this 2 × 3 grid, then press Transpose. The result should be 3 × 2 with first row 1, 4. This check catches a common mistake: changing the dimensions without actually moving entries.

\begin{bmatrix}
1 & 2 & 3 \\
4 & 5 & 6
\end{bmatrix}

A rotation matrix with a sign check

Load the rotation example. At theta = 0 its entries reduce to the 2 × 2 identity. The minus sign belongs in the upper-right cell for this convention. The tool displays the expression without simplifying it.

\begin{pmatrix}
\cos\theta & -\sin\theta \\
\sin\theta & \cos\theta
\end{pmatrix}
Questions

LaTeX matrix generator FAQ

Practical answers for moving between the grid, a document and an image.

Can I use LaTeX matrix generator output in Overleaf?

Yes. Add \usepackage{amsmath} to the preamble and paste the generated snippet inside \[ ... \] or another math environment. Do not paste a complete document into the image editor.

Why does an empty cell become zero?

A missing numeric entry can be easy to overlook. This generator explicitly writes 0 for blank matrix cells. If you intend visual spacing instead, expand the advanced source editor and adjust the generated source before export.

Can a cell contain another matrix?

Nested environments and explicit row or column separators are rejected in the grid to prevent malformed rows. For a block matrix, start with generated source and edit the formula in the advanced source panel.

Why does my document report an undefined command?

First check that amsmath is loaded. The browser preview uses MathJax and cannot verify every document macro or package. A custom command from your paper may need expansion before it can render here.

Does a shared URL restore the grid?

No. It restores the current formula and image settings in the preview. The grid starts from its default example, with a notice when it differs from the source. Changing the grid replaces the restored formula; arbitrary LaTeX is not parsed back into cells.
